Gravesend Town Pier
The Gravesend Town Pier is the oldest surviving cast iron pier in the world. Opened in 1834, it occupies the exact location as the original Town Quay mentioned in the Domesday Book. Between 1835 and 1842 he carried over 3 million passengers on this pier. By the early 20th century, however, with the advent of the railway and the pier no longer being an important hub for steam packet services to London, their numbers dwindled rapidly. In 2000 Gravesham Borough Council restored the pier and added a restaurant. However, the restaurant later went bankrupt. What remains today is a ferry service that operates between Gravesend and Tilbury. You can also cruise the Thames on barges and paddle steamers from newly installed pontoons.

Tilbury Fort
Across Gravesend is Tilbury Fort, initially built by Henry VIII in the 16th century to protect London’s approach to the sea. The fort was designed at a time when artillery fire was the main focus of warfare, so it was built to withstand the impact of artillery fire. Queen Elizabeth, I visited the fort on her way to West Tilbury Camp, where she delivered her famous rallying speech against the Spanish Armada in 1588.
During World War I, the fort was used as a storehouse of supplies, and troops were prepared for the trenches. The fort was used to defend London as an anti-aircraft and home guard defense until World War II. Today, you can explore the magazine house where the gunpowder was stored, or visit the fort’s magazine corridor to see how the soldiers felt there. Gravesend Nuclear Bunker
Gravesend Nuclear Bunker gives you a glimpse into what England looked like during the Cold War. This was the underground command post where Gravesend’s rescue and emergency services would be organized in the event of a nuclear attack. Built-in 1954, the bunker has been restored as if it had been used.
There are 13 rooms that once included power and ventilation systems, dormitories, and meeting rooms for senior management. Walk around the bunker and see the domestic fallout room, communications room, and replica radiation monitoring post. As part of your tour, also watch a government film advising citizens on how to protect themselves from a nuclear attack.

Admire the Thames Valley from the vantage point of Windmill Hill, Gravesend, and take in views of the Hyam and Sean Estuary Wetlands.
